Children are active and adventurous - which means dental injuries can (and do) happen. A pediatric dental emergency is any urgent oral health issue involving pain, trauma, infection, or damage that needs immediate attention.
Knocked-out (avulsed) baby or adult teeth
Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
Severe toothaches
Dental abscesses and infections
Lip, tongue, or cheek injuries
Broken or lost fillings or crowns
Swelling in the gums or face
If your child is in pain or has suffered a dental injury, it’s time to contact an emergency pediatric dentist immediately.
Before you arrive at our office, here are a few tips that may help ease your child’s discomfort:
Knocked-Out Tooth:
For baby teeth: Do not attempt to reinsert - call us.
For adult teeth: Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva. Do not scrub the tooth. Bring it with you immediately.
Chipped or Broken Tooth:
Rinse the mouth gently with warm water.
Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
Bring any tooth fragments with you.
Toothache:
Rinse with warm salt water.
Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek.
Avoid giving aspirin to children. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if age-appropriate) may help until you arrive.
Swelling or Abscess:
Rinse gently with warm salt water.
Seek dental attention immediately. Abscesses can spread quickly and become serious.
